Rhodes Town

The ancient mythology of Greece traces back the history of Rhodes Island as a gift given by the Sun God, Helios. According to the myth, Helios clothed the island with light and the piece of land was titled as the island of sun. Compared to any other Greek island, Rhodes enjoys the longest hours of sunshine.

The Rhodes town of Greece is one of the biggest municipalities in the Greek islands. Representing the south eastern Aegean's financial and cultural center, the Rhodes town, Greece combines its rich historical past with its present modernism.

Rhodes town is divided into two parts namely the Old city or the Medieval city and the New city. Surrounded by strong walls, the old city has become one of the biggest and the best preserved settlements of the medieval era of Europe. Testifying the rich history of the island, the city preserves the antiquity of the Byzantine time to the Turkish rule. Palaces, inns, hospitals, gothic churches, stone paved alleyways, magnificent arches together lend a magical ambience.

After the siege of Suleiman the Magnificent, the inhabitants built new settlements outside the walls of the Old City and this gave birth to the New city of Rhodes. The buildings of the New city are adorned by the architectural styles of the neo-Gothic and the Venetian era.

Well planned parks and wide streets make the New city a center for commerce and culture. Numerous luxurious hotels and cafes with world class facilities have sprung up all around the New City. Casinos, a national theatre and traditional dance theatres add to the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the Rhodes town of Greece.

The highest western part of the city is dominated by the Acropolis of Rhodes. Consisting of monuments, sanctuaries, temples and public buildings, the Acropolis is not fortified like any other ancient acropolis. Towards the northern edge of the Acropolis lies the Temple of Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus.

Rhodes town of Greece has a well planned tourist infrastructure and offers the visitors a wide rage of entertainment like night life, sport, cultural events and day trips to the neighboring islands. Apart from this the museums of the city give the visitors a chance to learn about the historical and cultural past of the Rhodes Islands.
